Last semester three students surveyed of their peers on the how satisfied they are with the entertainment, recreation, bars, and nightlife in the area surrounding NDNU.

the purpose of Genevieve Lindsey, Sara Shields and Kevin Vreeburg, students in Sujata Verma's class, was not only to evaluate the satisfaction of the students, but also to see where the city of Belmont and the surrounding areas (cities within a 20 mile radius) are lacking in student entertainment.

The survey asked students to rate their satisfaction on a 1-5 scale on subjects such as the quality and variety of theaters, restaurants, nightclubs, recreational activities and bars, as well as the overall cost of entertainment.

The results?

Of the 60 randomly polled students, the majority are satisfied with the quality of the entertainment and recreational activities of the surrounding areas. However, students were dissatisfied with the variety of entertainment and nightlife in Belmont and the areas surrounding the campus.

"I definitely thought it would turn out differently," said Shields.

The student pollsters concluded that there is a definite need for college student-aged entertainment.

"I am not extremely satisfied with the general entertainment around Belmont, but I was surprised to see that more people were neutral (about the survey)."

So if they had the chance to conduct the survey again, what would they do differently?

"I would do the survey again on a greater scale. I feel that although we did get a variety of people, we didn't get to see as broad as a scope as I would have liked to.

"I would probably break down the areas based on age, sexual orientation, and other factors to see which social groups are less or more satisfied with the general entertainment."

The survey added that an increase in satisfaction with the areas surrounding campus may ultimately increase the satisfaction students have with NDNU.

As their report concluded, "The introduction of better local options can ultimately raise student enrollment and applications throughout the university."
