Dear Athena
Issue date: 9/28/06 Section: Entertainment
Dear Athena,
How come people of authority on this campus overexercise their power? Several times this fall, I have been in situations where people of authority have talked down to me. I am sick of being treated as though I am still in grade school. I am an adult, and I should be treated like one.
Still in 5th grade
Dear Still in 5th grade,
People can often get on a power trip, but you have to let them do their thing. Let them think that they have got you underneath their grip and just ignore everything they say. There will be people throughout life that think they are on power trips, maybe a boss, or an in law. So let them do their thing but never let them truly have power over you.
Athena
Dear Athena,
I am beginning to really despise my roommate. I feel as though my privacy is being violated on so many levels. Sharing a room with anyone can be very trying at times; however, I lose my patience when I find trails of ants all over my desk because my roommate refuses to clean up his mess.
Violated
Dear Violated,
It seems to me as though you need to sit down with your roommate and discuss your feelings. Holding this frustration in will only eat away at your brain until you are so exhausted it is painful. If this does not work, don't be afraid to move out. It is always a great alternative.
Athena
Dear Athena,
My best friend since kindergarten is getting married in four months and I am to be the maid of honor. Naturally I was thrilled when she asked me, but her sister didn't feel the same way. I tried to turn it down in favor of her sister, but my friend simply refused the position to anyone other than me. Now her sister will not speak to either of us, and has threatened not to even come to her wedding. Everyone is so upset and stubborn. What do I do?
Maid of horror
Dear Maid of Horror,
This is a sticky situation, but if that is the way your best friend wants it for her wedding, that is the way it will be. If your friend is that upset, she could always give her sister the title but leave the real role to you. The sister will have the official title but you will be the real maid of honor.
