Campus deer get some new four-footed friends

Several reasons support the no-pets rule for residents. First, the residence halls are not equipped for pets, Oleksy said. The older buildings are in need of repair as is. Allowing students to have pets brings up a whole slew of issues. Care, responsibility and cleanliness were a few that Olesky referenced defending the no pet policy for students.

However, students have complaints of their own. Several residents who live around the staff's pets have complained of noise at all hours.

"I am very allergic to cats and don't like that one lives right next door…I hear that cat meowing loudly at all hours," said France Gatchalian, a resident of Wilkie 11. This is one of the several complaints from residents regarding the noise and health issues surrounding pets on campus.

Health issues aren't the only concerns from students regarding the new furry friends on campus. Rooms where pets live and the environment in those rooms have students concerned.

"Pet odor and dander will never be removed from the carpets unless new carpet is installed,"said Nora Lynn Vazquez, a student resident.

"What if I was assigned that room next year and I had health issues regarding pets…there shouldn't be pets allowed in the rooms because of health and sanitary concerns."
