NDNU Public Safety, once located in St. Joe's 101, made the leap to their new offices in St. Mary's Hall this September. Public Safety now occupies the front desk of St. Mary's, where the NDNU switchboard used to reside. The switchboard moved to Ralston Hall.

According to Chief of Public Safety Dave Mefford, "It's a central location."
The new location "provides 'one-stop shopping,'" said Mefford, linking the Business Office, the Office of the Registrar and Public Safety.

The hope, he said, is that this location will make it easier for students and visitors alike. It will especially affect commuters and night students whose schedules have them rushing from their cars to their classes.

Having the three main administrative offices together in one building will allow for easier access for these busy students.

"They don't have time to go all over campus."
According to Alicia Braner, the grad student who has provided the reception needs of Public Safety for more than a year, one of the benefits of Public Safety's new location is its "more visual presence than when we were in St. Joe's." Braner said that since the move, more people stop by.

"A lot of them are looking for tape and staplers," said Braner with a smile, "hence the sign," referring to a sign posted in the office's window that lets visitors know that Public Safety does not carry those office supplies that the switchboard always had ready to loan out.

According to Mefford, Public Safety has no plans to provide these services. Recent attempts at supplying students with tape and staples ended in disappearances.

"I've lost two staplers already," says Mefford.

Faculty members have also expressed concern regarding the St. Mary's copiers, which the switchboard kept supplied with paper. However, that duty now belongs to the Ralston Hall mail room.

In conjunction with Public Safety's move are several other changes which Public Safety has enacted recently or which are being planned for the future.

One of these changes is in Public Safety's duties. Whereas the library took care of lost IDs before, Public Safety will soon be taking up that duty. Public Safety purchased a new camera for ID pictures and they only await officers to be trained to use it.

The other major change is the updated fire safety equipment across the campus. Throughout the summer, contractors Cosco Fire Protection began updating much of the school's fire safety equipment, including the replacement of the St. Mary's fire panel, an ancient piece of technology that was due for an upgrade.
