As the holiday season begins so does the preparation for NDNU's annual production of A Christmas Carol, based on the story by Charles Dickens.
As is custom at NDNU, the production will be free to Bay Area audiences and will be performed Dec. 7-16. The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Sundays will not include evening shows.
"This is my second year in the show," said Gabrielle Au, theater major and NDNU senior, "I think the fact that there are so many regulars in the show is that they feel it's rewarding. We put it on and charge only for the gala, donating toys and food for charity."
This year will also be the second time that the NDNU theatre will present their updated version of the tale, featuring a musical score by Alan Menken, the composer of Disney's Beauty and the Beast and The Hunchback of Notre Dame as well as Little Shop of Horrors.
The lyrics are written by Lynn Ahrens who is known mostly for her work with Once On This Island. Along with the change in music, some of the choreography has changed as well as the design of the set.
"Last year was the first year of the new version," said Au, "We saw what worked and what didn't. Now we can make it better."
While the musical is based on the classic Dickens tale, it includes a little more color in its London streets. There will be dancing and singing as well as an interesting cast of characters that fill the scenes and help to develop Scrooge's characters. Some people are even cast as more than one character.
"The number of people I play runs the gambit," said Au. "I play a high-class banker's wife to a dancer from the dead to a low-class citizen and everywhere in between."
Parts of the show will also be performed off-campus at three different events. Two include a performance in the Tenderloin and at a choral presentation at an Alzheimer's facility.
"I'm excited and nervous for the show," said Au, "I'm excited to do all the dancing and being in different parts than I have been."
The opening performance for "A Christmas Carol" is the only performance that is not free and includes reserved seating and a reception in the Ralston Hall ballroom after the show.
