Drinks are flowing, the party rages, and when you least expect it, someone slips something into your drink and you blackout. You wake up without knowing what happened. Feelings of nausea and fuzziness set in.

Sexual assault is a touchy subject that every male and female need to be aware of. Date rape is only one aspect. However, what do you do when the perp is someone you know or someone you welcome into your home without suspecting anything? All of these scenarios are possible ingredients for sexual assault.

Today, date rape is one of the most common forms to get any girl or guy in the sack without them knowing. Drugs such as GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid), Rohypnol (flunitrazepam), and Ketamine (ketamine hydrochloride) are easily available to any sexual assaulter out there.

They're undetectable to the naked eye or the tongue and dissolve on contact with liquid leaving no trace. Whether it is a liquid, solid pill or powder, each drug has similar effects. Drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, seizures, blackout and distorted eyesight are all common side effects of a "rape" drug.

Partygoers and action-seekers need to be careful and constantly aware of their surroundings when going out for a fun night. You can prevent drugs from making their way into your cocktails by getting your own drink. Always watch the bartender make and serve your drink and make sure it doesn't pass through any other hands but yours and his/hers. Retrieve your own drink if it's in cans or kegs and try to avoid large bowls or buckets of pre-made drinks unless you made it.

Other ways to keep yourself safe and assault-free is to travel in pairs or groups of people. Make sure you always let someone know where you are going and try to stay with people you know. Frolicking is tons of fun, but going into rooms alone with peeps you barely know isn't a smart idea for anyone.

The odds are never in your favor when you go out and drink yourself silly. Party smart and safe, but remember to always have fun. Avoid shady situations and use common sense and better judgment when partying.

Trust me there have been plenty of situations where I should have been in trouble, but luckily I made it though safe and assault free. Don't make some of the same unnecessary decisions as me. Be in control of your own party experience!
