Student Tailored FYE Classes

First Year Experience, which all students are required to take, is once again changing.
FYE was started in the Fall Semester of 2000 and its mission was to teach students "what is means to be a part of a mission driven institution," said Vince Fitzgerald, PhD, director of the FYE program.
FYE will now be taught by only one teacher instead of two for this upcoming 2009 Fall Semester.
Much like in the past, professors will be able to choose their own curriculum as long as they base their teachings on specific guidelines.
Also attached to FYE is "a community based learning requirement," said Fitzgerald. Last year Fitzgerald, as well as other FYE professors, took students to Soledad to put on a carnival for migrant farm workers. It is extremely likely that the same community based learning experience will be held for the Fall Semester class.
There is some talk to tie FYE in with student life presentations such as learning time management skills. Fitzgerald doesn't "want it to be a catch all."
The presentations can't become the focus of the FYE program. He still believes that the program should be content based, but that presentations regarding student life may be incorporated at the professor discretion.
Fitzgerald will also be holding group meetings as well as individual meetings to make sure that the right content will be taught.
Fitzgerald also stated that students are allowed to select the specific section that interests them. There are going to be eight sections of FYE that have not yet been determined.
Fitzgerald said that the sections would most likely be similar to the Fall 2008 Semester sections of FYE.
