The magnificent colors, designs, and embroideries of Indian textiles are rare sights for many, but our own school campus gave us a chance to seem them all. Wiegand Gallery put on a show of these textiles from a collector named Carol Summers from March 25 to April 25.
This extraordinary collection shows an array of colors and designs from Indian textiles. Wiegand Gallery Director, Robert Poplack, said that they came from all different areas around India from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries and were used for many different things.
"A lot of them have a religious context behind them, they depict an important time or story in the culture," said Poplack. "They were used for a variety of purposes for covering cows, wall and door hangings, and even clothing."
Poplack has been wanting to have a textile show for a quite some time now. There hasn't been one since he came to NDNU. He was really excited that the collector, Summers, was interested in putting on a show.
"I want to show the different cultures and designs that the world offers," said Poplack. "I was excited that Carol was willing to show off some of her collection...from when she travels to India."
Poplack wants to always have a nice diversity of collections in the gallery. The last show was including very modern art, so this textile show was a nice change.
"These pieces aren't pieces that just go around in the tourist industry. They were used in everyday life, to decorate people's homes, cows, furniture. So on and so forth."
Student Brittney Kessler said that she was really interested in the exhibit.
"I loved the colors and the designs that the exhibit offered," said Kessler. "Seeing these made me interested in traveling to India and getting some of my own. I was interested in hearing what the different pieces were used for."
If you are interested in traveling to India maybe with Carol Summers and getting your own Indian textiles from January 2-23, 2010 you can contact her at (831) 423-0181.
