Technology Overload
Issue date: 4/29/09 Section: Opinion
Communication is key in our everyday lives, and technology has made it easier. Even phone calls are a thing of the past. With e-mails, SMS text messages, and instant messages, there isn't a need to actually speak with people anymore.
But this has made everyone in this world just a bunch of anti-social morons. We have no idea how to interact with people face-to-face. Without reaction, we don't know how people are actually responding and how they feel about what we say and our actions. Yes, people can reply to a message in all capitalized letters to portray yelling and anger, but people's real reactions are in their faces and in the tones of their voices. People don't know what's offensive and what's not because we don't interact with people enough.
Technology has also affected us in the way that news is communicated. We've come a long way from the news media of the past, which was mostly word-of-mouth, scrolls, flyers, and newspapers. Yes, even newspapers are now obsolete.
There are now many different ways to get your news, which include radio, television news, and online news sites. Each medium has a unique touch that makes it different from other mediums-online is interactive, TV allows for live video, radio has people call in. People can even check the news on their laptops and cell phones. Thus, there is no need to carry around a hard copy anymore.
While change is okay, some things don't need to be history quite yet.
Sometimes, we take those "simpler" days for granted. The days when we left work or went on vacation, and we were done. We didn't have e-mails to answer or phone calls to make while we were on vacation-we had free time. Now, technology consumes that free time. Yes, its fun to unwind to our favorite TV show, but it's technology like video games or social network sites, like Facebook and MySpace, that have become an addiction. Instead of working or paying attention in class, we are playing these games and surfing the sites.

I think that it is great that there are now many different ways to get your news, which include radio, television news, and online news sites.
