The theme across the board this year at NDNU has been an inclusive community. This year the Black Student Union has also adopted this idea. Students may have seen the poster or the bright red boxes appealing for new clean athletic socks. This inclusive community service project is headed by the Black Student Union in conjunction with St. Anthony's in Redwood City.
Raymond Jones, who advises the Black Student Union, encouraged them to become more involved in the community this year. Kierstie Barr, a sophomore and publicist for the Black Student Union, said that Jones asked the club at the beginning of the year; what kind of club do you want to be? Barr said they came to a consensus about wanting to help others stating "We've all gotten help from others along the way, so we want to help others too."
Max Torres who works at St. Anthony's contacted NDNU in hopes that they would pick up this donation project. Jones presented the project to the Black Student Union who decided to take on the venture. Barr worked closely with Jones and club president Sabrana Boyd to initiate the undertaking. Following the inclusive community agenda and diversity outreach program for this year Jones said "We are trying to show people that diversity is not just about color. Poverty is another type of diversity."
When asked if socks were truly significant Jones stated "Think about how uncomfortable it would be to have a hole in your sock. It's really important even though it's small." Barr also agrees with Jones. She mentioned that with the decline of the economy the need for clothing will be greater. In addition she also believes that although it is a small gesture warm socks can make a difference.
The Black Student Union has previously participated in community projects, but both Jones and Barr agree that this project is the focus for the Black Student Union during black history month.
St. Anthony's of Redwood City serves meals to about 650 people per day. In addition they serve 1,000 people per month with clothing, toiletries and household items. If you would like to donate clean new athletic socks look for the bright red boxes located in the Career Service Center, Center for Student Leadership and Public Safety. The Black Student Union is also accepting monetary donations which can be donated in the Center for Student Leadership.
